There is no single recovery schedule after an orthobiologic procedure, and Regen.MD does not publish one. What you can plan around is a sequence of phases. First is a protection phase, when the treated tissue is left alone. Next is a middle phase, when rehab comes back and gains start to show. Last is a longer phase, when you keep loading and rechecking. Your real dates come from the tissue that was treated and from your own exam. You leave the Clinical Evaluation with them in writing.
That answer is less satisfying than a week count. It is also why expectations so often go wrong. Patients who arrive with a fixed number in mind tend to read a normal phase as a failure.

What patients believe orthobiologics do
The expectation gap is measurable
One survey study asked 357 adult patients at a single orthopedic clinic between October 2023 and April 2024. Across the whole group, the most common beliefs were that orthobiologics could manage pain and inflammation (70.9%) and could treat cartilage injuries (66.9%). Only 44.0% were familiar with orthobiologics at all [1].
Among those who knew about these treatments, 45.9% believed orthobiologics could reduce pain. 36.3% believed they could speed healing. Views on the strength of the evidence were split. 37.6% thought it was not enough, and 15.3% thought it was enough [1].
Where patients get their information
In the same group, people got their information mainly from orthopedic surgeons (38.2%), other physicians (33.8%), and friends or family (32.5%). The authors concluded that patients still know little about these treatments, and that their understanding varies widely. Physicians, as the main source, play a key role in closing the gap [1].
That conclusion is the starting point of this page. Setting a timeline is a clinical act. It belongs in the visit, not in a search result.
How long is recovery after a PRP injection?
It starts with the tissue target
Recovery after a joint injection, a tendon injection, an intraosseous or subchondral injection into the bone, and a disc procedure are not the same problem. The structure being treated decides how fast load can come back and what counts as a warning sign along the way.
Before anything is booked, we define which tissue we are trying to change and which of your symptom drivers is most active. You can read how the orthobiologic options differ before your evaluation.
Phases, not dates
The early phase is about protection and letting the treated area settle. The middle phase brings back movement and then steadily more load. It is where change shows up in strength, range of motion, and how much you can do before symptoms rise. The later phase is about locking that in and deciding whether the plan is still the right one.
We describe it this way on purpose. A phase you can recognize is more useful than a date you can miss.
What are the signs that PRP is working?
The measures we recheck are things you can see for yourself. How do you handle stairs? How long can you walk? How does the treated area respond the day after a session? Can you finish the rehab program as written? Pain score alone is a noisy signal from week to week.
What affects how fast you recover after PRP?
The metabolic terrain
Regen.MD checks the metabolic and inflammatory terrain under worn joints, not only the joint. Whole-body factors affect how much load you can handle and how well you recover between sessions. That is why two people given the same procedure can move at different speeds.
Medication and rehabilitation
Bring your full list of medicines and supplements to the evaluation. What you take for discomfort after a biologic injection is a question for your clinician. It belongs in your written plan, not in a general rule.
The rehab half matters at least as much as the injection. An orthobiologic placed into tissue that is never steadily loaded afterward has been given only half a plan.
What is PRP for knee arthritis meant to do?
If your goal is to delay or avoid joint replacement, here is the honest framing. PRP for advanced knee osteoarthritis is a bridge therapy prior to arthroplasty. It is not a cartilage repair procedure, and we do not describe it as one. Judging a bridge by whether it restored a joint surface judges it against something it never claimed to do.
Regen.MD is conservative-first. Surgery is considered when conservative care has run out. Dr. Gurpreet Singh Padda, MD, MBA, MHP is a surgeon, so that conversation happens inside the practice.
The other timeline worth knowing is the one that runs before treatment: the first twelve weeks after an injury set the ceiling.

Get a recovery plan written for your case
Regen.MD begins with a physician-led Clinical Evaluation — a review of your history, imaging, and metabolic data, and a written terrain roadmap. Evaluation is contingent upon review of your data.

Frequently asked questions
Why will you not give me a number of weeks?
Because an honest number depends on three things. Which tissue was treated? What did your exam show before the procedure? What is your rehab plan? A published week count that ignores those three things is marketing, not a forecast. You get a written estimate for your own case at the evaluation. That written plan is part of how we structure care.
Can I take ibuprofen after an orthobiologic injection?
Ask before you take anything. Medicine advice after the procedure depends on which biologic was used and on your own medical history. So it belongs in your written plan, not in a general rule you found online. We walk through the reasoning in rest, ice and ibuprofen after PRP.
I have hit a plateau. Does that mean it failed?
Not on its own. A plateau is information. It may reflect a normal phase, a rehab program that stopped moving forward, or a target that was not the right one. The answer is a recheck, not another injection on schedule. The common reasons for failure are set out in why PRP injections fail.
Is recovery from a spinal orthobiologic different from a knee?
The rehab is different because the mechanical demands are different. Spine work is paced around how well you tolerate movement and how well you control your trunk. Knee work is paced around load and walking. So the two plans do not carry over to each other. The spine side is described in our intradiscal PRP injection protocol.
Do peptides speed up recovery after an orthobiologic procedure?
At Regen.MD we discuss peptides as clinical and teaching topics. They are not products, and they are not shortcuts for a recovery timeline. Nothing on this site claims that a peptide shortens healing after an injection. Our framing is set out under physician-directed peptide therapy.
How long should you rest after a PRP injection?
Rest is the first phase, not a fixed number of days. In the early protection phase, the treated tissue is left alone to settle. How long that lasts depends on what was treated. A knee joint, a tendon, bone under cartilage and a spinal disc all move at different speeds. You leave the Clinical Evaluation with your own dates in writing.
What are the do’s and don’ts after PRP?
Do bring your full list of medicines and supplements, and ask before taking anything for discomfort. Do finish the rehab program as written, because an injection without steady loading afterward is only half a plan. Don’t judge progress by pain score alone, which is noisy week to week. Don’t read a normal phase as failure. A plateau calls for a recheck, not another injection on schedule.
