EMG Nerve Test of the Leg:
trace leg pain to its source

A leg EMG, done together with a nerve conduction study (NCS), shows if a nerve serving your low back or leg is squeezed or injured, and where. The test is done, read and reported by a physician.

Tests are ordered only when the result will steer what happens next.

What is nerve test of the leg?

Pairing EMG with a nerve conduction study (NCS) reveals squeezing or injury along a nerve serving the low back or leg. It is done, read and reported by a physician.

What it does for you

Leg pain, numbness or weakness may trace back to a compressed nerve root in the lower spine, or to a nerve out in the leg. The study sorts one from the other so treatment lands where the trouble is.

Its role around regenerative treatment

A disc, a facet joint and a nerve in the leg can all send pain down the same leg. Sorting them out before any procedure is how a plan stays targeted.

The experience on test day

Small pads send brief electrical pulses along the nerve; each feels like a quick snap. A very fine needle then samples a handful of leg muscles, which feels like a pinch. Nearly everyone resumes normal activity the same day.

Getting ready

Pick shorts or roomy pants. Skip any lotion or cream on the legs that morning.

Flag these for us beforehand

  • Blood-thinning medicine
  • A pacemaker
  • Swelling or a skin condition on the leg

Time involved

Budget about 30 to 60 minutes. You get a start time when it is booked.

What to remember

  1. The study separates a spine source from a leg source.
  2. Legs stay lotion-free that day.
  3. Blood thinners and pacemakers get mentioned up front.

Show us you have it: Before you go, run through your test-day routine for us: clothing, skin, medicines. If a point is fuzzy, say so and we walk through it again with you.
