Heat and Cold Therapy:
the warm-up and the calm-down
Heat and cold therapy means hot packs, cold packs or the infrared heating table placed on the painful area, usually to open a visit. Cold quiets a fresh flare; heat softens stiff tissue so the stretching and loading after it accomplish more. Your physician makes that choice.
This one runs only on a physician’s written order, at the intensity that order specifies.
What is heat and cold therapy?
Hot packs, cold packs or the infrared heating table, whichever your physician picks, go over the area being treated. It typically opens the visit.
What it does for you
Cold slows swelling and numbs a fresh flare. Heat relaxes stiff muscle and raises blood flow, so the motion and strength work that come next accomplish more.
Its role around regenerative treatment
Around a regenerative procedure, the choice matters. The early inflammation after a PRP injection is part of the repair signal, so your physician decides whether and when cold goes over a treated area. Heat is used to ready stiff tissue for loading, never as a substitute for it.
The sensation, moment to moment
Heat should be a pleasant warmth and never scorching. Cold starts cool and drifts toward numb. A towel layer always separates pack from skin, and five minutes in, your technician inspects the skin.
When this treatment is off the table
- Areas where your skin has lost feeling
- Heat on an injury under three days old that is still puffy or discolored (cold is used then)
- Cold with Raynaud’s disease, hives set off by cold, or weak blood flow at the site
- Any open wound, rash or burn on the spot
- Heat across the belly or low back in pregnancy
- A fever, or an infection that is active
Your technician reads the safety questions aloud at every visit, and any change in your answers goes to the physician before a treatment starts. You may call a stop whenever you like.
Time involved
Budget about 10 to 15 minutes. The order sets the clock, not the machine.
What to remember
- Fresh flare gets cold; stiffness gets heat.
- Pleasant warmth only. Speak up the moment it bites.
- A towel layer goes between skin and pack, every time.
Show us you have it: Before you go, describe your home routine: which pack, how many minutes, and what layer protects your skin. If a point is fuzzy, say so and we walk through it again with you.
